Some of the most dangerous workplace hazards are invisible threats, such as dirt, debris, particles, and gases. To combat these risks, Salus First Aid and Safety offers a comprehensive line of respiratory protection products and training designed to keep your employees safe in any environment.

Types of Respirators

Selecting the right respirator based on the specific gas, debris, or hazard type present in your workplace is crucial for employee protection. ANSI Z88.6-2006 is the standard often referenced by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professionals when determining the appropriate level of respiratory protection.

  1. Disposable Respirators: These masks come in various types with different levels of protection. They are typically used to shield wearers from airborne dirt, debris, liquids, and other hazardous materials that could cause harm if inhaled.
  2. Half-Mask Respirators: Worn in combination with other PPE, half-mask respirators are designed to filter out specific contaminants from the air, depending on the type of cartridge and mask used. They provide essential protection while allowing for the use of additional safety gear.
  3. Full-Face Respirators: Full-face respirators offer comprehensive protection for the entire face, shielding the eyes, nose, and mouth from airborne particulates. Like half-mask respirators, they work by filtering out specific contaminants based on the cartridge and mask combination.
  4. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): SCBA systems include a tight-fitting full-face mask connected to a self-contained oxygen supply, often carried by the wearer. These respirators are essential in environments with significant oxygen deficiencies or gas/vapor concentrations that pose a “danger to life or health.”

Note: Always consult your safety and EHS team before selecting a respirator type to ensure it meets the specific needs of your workplace hazards.

Fit Testing

Fit testing is a critical process to determine whether a respirator properly fits and seals around a particular wearer’s face. This testing ensures that the mask provides a full seal around the nose, mouth, and face, offering maximum protection. However, fit testing does not evaluate the efficacy of the cartridges against specific gases or particulates. Consult your safety and EHS team to determine if fit testing is required for your business.

Salus First Aid and Safety is committed to providing top-notch respiratory protection solutions, ensuring that your employees are well-equipped to handle any airborne hazards they may encounter in the workplace.
